NeckHugs CollarBryce

Bryce loves her Neck Hug collar. It's better than a stiff Elizabethan color. They wash up nicely, effective and have cute fabric designs. Bryce lays her head on the donut as a pillow. Wag Tail Farms donated two for little Bryce.

Welcome to Westie Rescue of Calfornia

Westie Rescue of California and seven Western states, is a charitable and educational private independent not-for-profit organization. As our Mission Statement indicates, we are active in providing public breed education, rescue services, foster rehabilitation, animal training, terrier knowledgeable, and often times, life-saving medical care, and placement in approved forever homes. Our rescues come from every walk of life; owner surrendered, shelter found, abused, abandoned, neglected, puppy mill raids, professional referrals or otherwise — any Westie-in-Need.

Our Founding Directors have more than 75+ years dedication to the breed they love. We are the oldest and largest independent Westie Rescue within the state and possibly the West Coast, garnering a stellar reputation along the way as relentless caretakers of the breed. We applaud our hundreds of dedicated volunteers, adopters and loving Westie owners who give back to the breed. Our breed gives such joy, laughter and often tears along the paw-path of life. Our organization has a long association with the WHWT Club of California and WHWT Club of America.

BRAVO and KUDOS to those who make a difference in the life of a rescued Westie.

UPDATE February 7, 2022

We are now receiving rescues, doing adoption placements, performing in-home checks and accepting rescues again. They are coming in from owner surrenders, Vet contacts and shelter pulls. There are still far fewer dogs coming in than pre-pandemic, and speaking to other breed rescues it would seem that the situation is pretty generally widespread. The ones who are coming in generally have neglected major health issues, medical and behavior problems and they must go into our long-term foster care homes. This creates a backlog of unadoptable rescues and our foster homes not available to quickly turn around Westies In Need. As previously experienced in rescue, these rescues often present with temperament issues which need experienced behavior training care/help and to be expected take up a foster care homes for quite a while. Naturally we can't rehome a dog which we know has bitten, is unsocialized or untrained until we have worked with them extensively and are confident that they can be now be managed in the experienced Terrier home.

We have a loving senior Westie which will need special care due to age related medical issues, previously untreated care, is somewhat blind, and requires daily eye ointments necessary for dry eye. His medical requirements will limit the most suitable homes. At the moment our knowledgeable Vet is working on regulating the previously untreated medical issues so he is comfortable and can function within the appropriate household. Once again we must wait until we have the best possible medical management regime in place before finding an excellent adoptive home.

We understand our Tentatively Approved applicants are anxious to hear they have been chosen for one of our placeable rescues. Our process is thorough and dedicated to the dogs within our care and we will not shortcut this process. Please be patient, as we care for these deserving Westies In Need.

The rescue's stories will be updated as their stories, needs and adoptive home requirements are explored. This is a labor of love and our continued commitment to the rescues who cannot speak for themselves.

Please help with the ongoing medical costs and care necessary to help these deserving Westies.
